I think it is settled my favorite skirt pattern is Simplicity 2184 pattern A. I have made 6 total and have fabric for a 7th. I made a couple changes over time the only major change is I have stopped sewing on the waistband. I am simply folding the top of the skirt over an inch then folding the edge under 1/4 inch to make a casing for the elastic. This change came out of necessity because I lost the pattern for the waistband! It is much easier and is actually has a more finished look inside. The other thing I do is serge the seams inside the skirt because I do wash them in the machine. I love that I am even able to dry them in the machine dryer and the length and fit seem to be the same. The hem I double over so there is no raw edge and strings to cut.
The fabric I use is simple cotton fabric at Hobby Lobby. I love how comfortable the skirts are. I am 5'2 and the skirt falls a couple inches above the ankle On a taller lady, the hem might be around mid calf. The length of this skirt makes them great for everyday wear. I can clean easily with out tripping over a too long skirt. I can also keep modest when taking my children out and sitting on the floor reading a book together.
Pardon my wrinkles please |
One time when talking to my teenage niece I said something about my wearing skirts and I told her I think I feel more comfortable in modest skirts because I have lived for the world for so long. This is my way of saying I don't except the world's idea of beauty anymore ie. being sexy. That is for one man, not all men. I'm done with the comparisons and attention grabbing feeling that those clothes bring. I have had the attention of worldliness but it no longer fulfills (it never really did). I want people to see me now for the smile I give them or the helping hand I reach out to them.
I enjoy sewing them, they are comfortable to wear and I love pretty fabric. So for now they are here to stay along with the aprons but that is another post. ;)
